I’m LilMD2B and my pronouns are she/her. I’m an incoming, #firstgen Canadian MS1 (and first gen college grad). I hail from a lower income family and small town, and I’m already feeling the imposter syndrome sinking in big time.

On that note, as a 1st-gen incoming doctor and 1st-gen immigrant - does anybody have any tips or wisdom to impart on a new med student? #MedStudentTwitter #MedTwitter #MedEd

I’m #firstgen MD (+child of immigrants)! It’s tough to find mentors compared to classmates who come from the profession/connections, but be persistent! +keep an open mind - specialty I thought I wanted day 1 is v different from the one I plan to apply to carms for this year 😊 https://t.co/oMN2FGHn2C

@CieraGrahamPhD @uofcincy I started with a .67 GPA. Could only go up from there. #firstgen #bipocrolemodelsmatter

One of the things that statistics on #firstgen, underprepared, and middle-class college students tends to occlude is just how alienating, boring, and frustrating seminars are for students unequipped with the soft skills to play the academic game. It's even worse with #elearning.

This is an awesome article about imposter phenomenon and academic preparedness. Enjoy. 😊@AcademicChatter @1stGenScholars #FirstGen https://t.co/1WuXlVAo5W

Can now add to a growing list of accomplishments as a #firstgen #internationalstudent in academia:
1. Brings💰to U.S. college budgets
2. Speaks English
3. "in this country thanks to (my) grandparents tax $$"
....
n. Threat to U.S. national security and job markets.

Quite a CV. https://t.co/nU9WnnVZQd

Medical Schools have a similar history. Money = access to resources, social capital, and fewer financial pressures. This was a 2015 study; I couldn’t find more recent data: #firstgen https://t.co/bTtam0CxMy https://t.co/IUjbHaZRTr

Proud #FirstGen "1/5 Med students has a parent who's a physician." https://t.co/gyQsJkzz57

Great article by @eddiekimx on the struggles of #firstgen students and its relationship to - among other things - scholastic culture, not lack of aptitude or technical ability. https://t.co/tlTw8foyCz

I was working in the ER (as a pre-med) when an elderly non-English speaking patient was brought in with altered mental status. When I approached, she grabbed my arm, blurted her son’s phone number in Vietnamese, then passed out. She was going to be a ‘Jane Doe’. #diversitymatters https://t.co/M6hD4Gj50c

Some of the first families I worked with while they resettled in the US were Arabic and Sureya speaking Iraqis. This joy and connection we experience through dialogue is relief & a sense of Eastern community they've left behind. #USCRI #CLE #FirstGen #ImmigrantsGetTheJobDone https://t.co/lvSt0T1HDy

Especially as a #firstgen student who often had to figure things out (still do in #academia quite a lot), I found this article by @race_talks on the ways educators can facilitate such navigation fascinating & may use it in classes soon -> https://t.co/asUj5lllcF #soctwitter

two explained they’re the primary caregiver during the day for siblings so being focused is a challenge #firstgen

out of my class of 19 first year undergrads, 3 have no internet access other than their phone. and a couple still have no laptops. #firstgen

@surt_lab Had a once a week class that I missed one week. Showed up the next week to realize that it was exam day. Failed pretty hard. As #firstgen I didn’t learn about the importance of the syllabus until the next semester.

@astro_jaz A D in my second-semester composition class. I became a college writing professor. Don’t let anyone tell you to stop. #firstgen

Professors must help #firstgen students master academia's "hidden curriculum," which goes beyond getting good grades to the unwritten rules and unspoken expectations of college, writes Marcia Chatelain in @chronicle. https://t.co/Rhf6OGu1HN

My honey gonna be a mentor for all the new 1L’s this fall lol #lawschool #firstgen

@astro_jaz Oh my gosh, yes. D in botany first time out (1975), now an old botany professor. Teach in the same room in which I earned said D. Follow your heart. #firstgen

@Letterstomyname @AcademicChatter It doesn’t frustrate me. I feel privileged to have made it this far as #firstgen and low-income background. I also feel its my responsibility to use this privilege and help others with similar backgrounds to get to where I am or higher.
