The recent attacks on @sapinker are completely unjustified. Pinker is a brilliant scholar, a valued colleague and a thoroughly decent human being. Read his books and see for yourselves.

How persuasive and persuadable are you? A new website aims to find out. Mother Jones editor Daniel King welcomes a new and important entry to the republic of letters. https://t.co/OmEpvrsnhm via @MotherJones

@JoHenrich @sapinker Good thread. Thanks for standing up for viewpoint diversity & free speech. Every researcher who takes human behavioral evolution seriously, no matter how careful they've tried to be, is high on the cancelation hit list.

Quoted @JonHaidt

.@sapinker is an exemplary academic, bringing interesting ideas to the public, with nuance. An "open letter" against him in part for tweeting academic studies is unfair. https://t.co/g6RZt6L90H

Is the free exchange of diverse views out in the academy? This open letter, from a supposedly learned society, calls for the silencing and demotion of @sapinker based largely on tweets going back a decade. https://t.co/W7cIi2WQ3Q

@HadasKotek This letter says it is not trying to "cancel" Steve Pinker. But the explicit point of the letter is to take him off the LSA Fellows list and take away his influence in the LSA. This seems like canceling. Also, someone signed Ray Jackendoff's name: Ray did not sign that letter.

Some wondered this open letter to the Linguistics Soc of America https://t.co/iYoAuJ78mJ demanding they rescind my Fellow status is a satire of woke outrage culture, w its hallucinated “dog whistles,” fury over tweets of NYT & WaPo opeds, and obvious forged signatures...

I'm with you, Steve, because your intellectual work communicating so divergent arguments has made the fight against racism more accessible to all incl. non-leftists thanks to your framing it as a way of progress, and bc of 'freedom of expression & info' & open society, my friend. https://t.co/PusjlE2Tli

They're coming for Steven Pinker for his "public support for David Brooks," not condemning Bernie Goetz enough, denying an incel shooting as evidence of the patriarchy, and "co-opting" the work of a black scholar, which I think means citing him. https://t.co/7wb3JqJkb1 https://t.co/9mYpkyM2DG

Every fucking line of this is must-reading on the attempt to defenestrate ⁦@sapinker⁩. Decide for yourself about the erudite demons at the gates. https://t.co/H1IlHAmjJS

.@sapinker exemplifies enlightenment values, progressive values, academic values. Here @evolutionistrue gives a line-by-line refutation of the charges against Pinker in that open letter about his tweets

@paulg @sapinker @nytdavidbrooks If you don't know why David Brooks has been cancelled, I'm afraid we'll have to cancel you too. Sorry, them's the rules.

A final comment: I feel sorry for the signatories. Moralistic dudgeon is a shallow and corrosive indulgence, & policing the norms of your peer group a stunting of the intellect. Learning new ideas & rethinking conventional wisdom are deeper pleasures …

In characteristic style, @sapinker uses even personal attack as an opportunity to impart wisdom on moral progress. His relentless courage in the face of bullies reminds us of why we need him. After nearly 10 years of direct collaboration, I have nothing but good things to say. https://t.co/xKriu04lV3

… and ultimately better for the world. Our natural state is ignorance, fallibility, & self-deception. Progress comes only from broaching & evaluating ideas, including those that feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

I've placed the letter I sent to the Linguistic Society of America (on letterhead over email) on my website. Unlike most in genetics, I AM a card-carrying applied linguist. cc @JonHaidt @SamHarrisOrg @JohnHMcWhorter @primalpoly @PamelaParesky My letter: https://t.co/GFJyWOBYVY https://t.co/3oaCkhaSn2

I denounce Yascha for failing to denounce @sapinker and @nytdavidbrooks quickly enough and with insufficient zeal. https://t.co/wdEvz4ZyBS

At first, I was going to defend @sapinker. But when I learned, from this letter, that he has refused to denounce @nytdavidbrooks, I realized that I immediately need to denounce them both, lest I be denounced in turn. 🙄 https://t.co/iRBE5LJCyV

Yascha Mounk (Trigger warning: this is ironic) https://t.co/tXh5BnGDUX

Dogwhistle: speech act “that sends one message to an outgroup while at the same time sending a second (often taboo, controversial, or inflammatory) message to an ingroup” LSA doc calling for @sapinker removal is itself a dogwhistle, along with cancel culture itself.
