1. Big news out of Canada: Abu Huzayfah has been arrested on a terrorist “hoax” charge. The narrative tension of our podcast “Caliphate” is the question of whether his account is true. In Chapter 6 we explain the conflicting strands of his story, and what we can and can’t confirm https://t.co/w0CbPGvzeA

1. There’s also a much broader point of significance to the Abu Huzayfah case, which I’ll try to unpack a bit here: https://t.co/VTpgZFBMRB

you can all stop looking and go home. i’ve found the best tiktok. https://t.co/BFnKwhgSxA

6. Myself and colleagues at @internews are tackling these questions and others in the months to come. Any journalists or humanitarians keen to collaborate can dm me! https://t.co/fbxWdyH5KK

5. Covid has changed how we interact with our neighbors, how we work, and our capacity to respond to other pressing crises in Lebanon. More can be done to understand the individual perspective: what information do people have, what info is being misconstrued or ignored, and why?

4. The lack of a holistic response has, however, increased the authority of doctors and first responders who have become perhaps the most trusted sources on covid in Lebanon. Yet most reporting focuses on facts and figures: confirmed cases, testing rates, hospital capacity, etc.

1. The breakdown in trust towards most, if not all, public institutions in Lebanon has left significant space for the spread of misinformation and rumors around covid-19.

A rights respecting standard unified contract for migrant domestic workers is an important first step, but it does not #AbolishKafala in #Lebanon. The contract must meet intl standards & be accompanied by stringent enforcement mechanism (1/3) https://t.co/lSS1Cqjf6D https://t.co/bNbYEo2Whl

My latest for @ecfr. I really don't see anything positive coming out of #Lebanon in the future except for grassroots solidarity. To friendly countries, supporting the status quo while asking for reforms is just delaying the inevitable: Lebanon's collapse. https://t.co/qPQ7tKvdRY

Pushing back against the state’s status quo is crucial from countries keen to support #Lebanon. But responding by pouring millions of $$s into alternative mechanisms (like the aid sector) without also pushing for reforms could just reinforce another problematic status quo. https://t.co/tUcswYEUUD

Episode 7 is now out on all platforms! We spoke to @mona_fawaz about the damages caused by the #Beirut explosion, dangers of neoliberal reconstruction policies, how to combat gentrification, preserve urban heritage, and protect housing rights. Link: https://t.co/vyu78NmPxA https://t.co/6PJ4wIeWxg

Our sister are sleeping on the street they are over 40 some dumped by their sponsors some ran from abuser what’s worse than being forced to sleep like this. This is outside our embassy in Beirut we are providing food sanitizer, masks & tickets but we need to shout for these girls https://t.co/qQ8Wh0Emtf

In photos: Snippets from #Karantina, a poor Beirut neighbourhood that was devastated by the #BeirutBlast. The residents I photographed asked that I share these photos widely ‘so everyone can see what happened here.’ The area has received less attention & aid than others, they say https://t.co/XUshGgqd82

THREAD Beirut’s fast-moving, bottom-up disaster response has given the capital a much-needed injection of practical support and collective purpose. But this model also has pitfalls, which may prove self-defeating unless local and foreign actors adjust

The grassroots response in the aftermath of the explosion has been nothing short of inspiring. What's needed now is critical reflection on what has (and hasn't) worked, to help define where larger actors can make these initiatives more effective, rather than replicating them. https://t.co/YutUx7Xh1W

Almost a quarter of the victims of the #BeirutExplosion were Syrian.

Excellent by @BenParker140. 1 comment: International actors treat humanitarian aid--as opposed to reconstruction--as above politics. This is folly: Lebanon's regime will use food and medical aid as a political resource. Donors & UN must act accordingly. https://t.co/gXBkLN8Qju

The Kenyan women are outside their embassy in Badaro, they are stranded in Lebanon & need to get home. Their consulate isn’t listening. We need mattresses & pillows or they’ll be sleeping on concrete w/ children tonight. If ur in Beirut & can offer ones I’ll arrange pick up.

This is a nice alternative to what I've noticed on some other Beirut housing pages in the last few days--brokers and landlords shamelessly posting overpriced units as if nothing had changed. Luckily some were shamed for it! https://t.co/wqL43bkF9K

One structural engineer I spoke to said, on #BeirutBlast after-effects, that many of the buildings are unsafe, esp those of unreinforced concrete & those directly in line with and exposed to the shock waves of the initial blast. #Beirut #Lebanon https://t.co/HSF3qKVH9W

The dust has not even settled on the #Beirut_Explosion, yet Lebanon's political establishment is only interested in evading accountability.
