An Australia With No Google? The Bitter Fight Behind a Drastic Threat (Or who would win in a fight, Superman or Batman?) https://t.co/UmHzqQScwp

Hank Aaron ranks as my best-ever source call. He was on a board of a financial company and agreed to talk to me as a very young and green reporter. He was so gracious and kind. And then British copy desk editor cut his quote for print, not knowing who he was.

Hank Aaron was one of the 1st baseball players I ever learned about. When I got old enough to understand statistics, it didn't seem possible that someone had done what he had done. When I learned more about who he was, and where he played, even more so. May his memory be eternal.

I feel absolutely terrible tonight for Olympic athletes around the world who prepared so diligently in their disciplines for this moment and now it appears will not be able to compete in Japan. And for Japanese citizens who worked so hard against the odds. What a damn shame.

Alphabet is grounding Loon. After a decade of pursuing high-altitude hot air balloons as floating cell towers, it said it doesn't see a way to get costs down to make Loon a viable business. https://t.co/s51cNFjHbC

For those asking: Reps. Eshoo and Malinowski introduced a bill in October that would amend Section 230 to hold platforms liable if their algorithms promoted content "involving interference with civil rights" and "acts of international terrorism." https://t.co/Ma35zT99p7

Some of us have shouted this for years, so this sentence from Congress is refreshing: The algorithms sort and spread "information to users by feeding them the content most likely to reinforce their existing political biases, especially those rooted in anger, anxiety and fear."

Two members of Congress, @RepAnnaEshoo & @Malinowski, just sent well-researched letters to the CEOs of Facebook, Google, YouTube and Twitter, urging them to fix their algorithms that promote conspiracy theories and push people to political extremes.

Just happened on this @RoniNYTimes story on the first Covid-19 case in the U.S. -- one year ago today. Since then, more than 24.5 million people have been infected and 408,130 have died. https://t.co/fI87udI8jq

BREAKING: Federal judge in Seattle denies alt-social media site Parler's request for order forcing Amazon to keep hosting its service. Doc: https://t.co/LHhgl9vfjg

Parler will remain offline for now. By all accounts, they appear to be trying to figure out how to host themselves. That could take a while. https://t.co/R718VFNBEx

A very nice @maggieNYT dispatch from the final day. It was often infuriating but often inspiring and invigorating to compete against Maggie on the Trump beat. Kudos on an incredible run. https://t.co/bVtQXx2wyp

This the third Wednesday this month that has featured either an insurrection, impeachment or inauguration.

One of the most stark changes already is that President Biden wears a mask in the oval office. He has received both doses of the vaccine. That means he is, in effect, wearing it to protect others in the room, in case he could still spread the virus. https://t.co/X22w2XY5Hp
