How many times has Facebook been cancelled on the back of Mark’s principles? Elon? Jack? Relax. It is part of the rite of passage. Focus on your mission. Measure your impact. That is the feedback loop that changes the world.

Every company that matters today has been read their funeral rites at some point because they stuck to mission rather than bend to the whims and caprices of “stakeholders”.

Mission matters. Great businesses are built on principles - not just profit. In many ways, consensus is the opposite of mission. You can’t crowdsource mission on Twitter. The public is that fickle.

Congrats to Helios on their acquisition by Fairfax Holdings. Amazing to see an African capital trail blazer innovate what we all know is a broken capital structure. We are right behind you!

PS: This is my 1,000,000th reminder that I really need to write that book on building the future in Africa but first gotta complete the loop with @anafricanfuture and #talentcity #shownottell

As for the plantation stuff - I really have no words.

Maybe one day a journalist will have the data to do a proper deep dive on that topic.

Sadly in the end the article didn’t clearly answer the question I believe it would have provided a lot of useful info about the economics of Andela’s biz which is on aggregate how much of what employers pay go to the fellows.

E

In the end what the article was really about was BBC’s (and the media overall) oversimplification of the Andela narrative. Points back to the many debates on here about the lack of veracity in tech reporting and this is one of the downstream impacts albeit unnecessarily blown up

There are many lessons to learn from Andela pivot from mission driven talent development to the business of talent but I hope leaving the important business of education to govt isn’t one of them.

E

Well that’s a great question but do you not see the answers all around you. I have always maintained that in a perfect society Andela should be a public good but here we are - and while there is a lot about it I don’t agree with it, leaving this to govt would be way worse.

I really hope we don’t learn the wrong lessons from Andela. One quote particularly sticks out to me ‘Why is it the private sector that needs to come in and innovate? Why can’t schools, governments, etc do that job?’.

Yes, you are right. Charity begins at home so our engineers should be strictly solving local problems. But then again - this isn’t charity. This is business. Go global. Earn your dollars. #africatotheworld

I discovered a learning app for our teenager called ULesson which, had it prepared for this day, would have made a successful killing when the lockdown started. It had some great lessons, but didn't have enough courses listed, so became ultimately useless for us.
