@ancientlyric this approach makes a lot of sense. it's exactly what mediæval music researchers did - reconstructions of lutes informed by modern oud building, gaps in knowledge of plectrum technique supplemented by modern oud technique, asian folk shawms gave clues for shawm reeds etc.
