I spent months getting to know a landlord & the tenant who owes her $30,000+ in back rent. Eviction moratoriums, while well-intentioned, put them both in a bad spot. My latest piece explains why we're looking at a possible housing crisis when they expire. https://t.co/57mjq6921x

My last story detailed how eviction moratoriums were hurting both tenants & small landlords. There, I included details of a tenant who had fallen behind on rent by ~$30K. I got emails asking how that was possible. Here, the tenant explains it for himself: https://t.co/pUxPLm4kkm

Today, after a series of unproductive sessions, a majority of our members joined our bargaining committee at the table to observe our negotiations with management. Management responded by unlawfully demanding that those union members leave.

“She knew if she evicted him, he and his partner, who is laid up with bad hips, would have nowhere to go. “He teared up, and I teared up,” de Laat recalls. “I couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t, in the middle of a pandemic, evict them.” Writes @abbyvesoulis Important, nuanced piece https://t.co/lpU9W5ihbA

A new report shows that disabled voters experiencing difficulty voting dropped sharply in 2020, thanks in large part to more voting options during the pandemic. Now Republicans in many states are trying to reverse mail voting rules & other expansions: https://t.co/TDOlkB8CoW

There is a looming eviction crisis in the U.S., with millions at risk, but it's much more complicated—for both landlords and tenants—than most realize. Read @abbyvesoulis: https://t.co/8L9QlpRKGw

"If I left my job...to care, full time, for my 2-year-old son, I’d be described as leaving the labor force. But as much as I adore my child, there is absolutely no doubt I’d be working harder. I’d have fewer days off, a more demanding boss and worse pay." https://t.co/fId52L1xtH

What it’s like being an impeachment manager in a pandemic: Rep. Joe Neguse would FaceTime his wife and baby, order dinner at 11 pm (!!!) and revise his scripts until the early morning. Via @tcberenson https://t.co/NSFoOUzlsr

My lesson from isolation: if you like someone's work you should tell them. Even if you think they don't need to hear it. Because these days we're all just sending out messages in bottles to each other. I've let myself fangirl out for a year and it's led to some real friendships.

A low-cost food plan for a single mom with 1 kid is about $97/week, per USDA. If the mom works a full-time, minimum wage job, she earns $290/week before taxes. That leaves $193/week for rent, daycare, utilities, gas, insurance, etc. There are absolutely people who are hungry. https://t.co/XaOYuAY2oM

I wish readers knew the late nights I spend as a reporter trying to parse state statutes to figure out how a state classifies a certain type of school for licensing -- all for one sentence in a 3,000 story

Being in the minority on a committee isn’t particularly glamorous but a lot of members I’ve talked to say paying your dues matters in Congress. Seniority is huge on committees. Losing years on a panel means losing your place in line for positions of power. https://t.co/X5rh4HtDtE

The $62 million Amazon agreed to pay to settle FTC charges it stole tips from drivers is chump change to the company—not even 1/100 of the company’s Q4 net earnings—but I think it will be telling of the issues the company faces as it grows & grows & grows. https://t.co/g2dC7PqdBp
