🥰We'd like to wish a happy birthday to our phenomenal Strategic Manager of Communications, Ruth Mthembu! Have an oceanic new year both in your professional and personal life Ruth, you're a wonderful leader and an inspiration💃🕺 #RuthTurns28 https://t.co/otsOvYz6oW

The ocean regulates our climate and absorbs around one-third of the CO2 produced* *Quoted from the WWF SA report 2016 The list is endless. So, this is really your business too. The reasons to care far outweigh the reasons not to care.

Even though this may be out of sight, it can’t be out of mind for you because: The ocean covers 70% of the earth’s surface and is a critical life support to humanity. Every 2nd breath we take comes from the ocean.

Also, embarking on oil drilling ventures and affiliated activities can lead to devastating results often being a by-product as we have recently seen with the devastating #MauritiusOilSpill.

Coming back to the good news: Critically endangered marine life won’t be subject to further exploration stressors like seismic surveys, and environmentally significant areas will remain untouched.

Now, the Dept. of Mineral & Energy Resources may say that offshore oil & gas mining will create jobs for South Africans, but this isn’t true. Most of these oil & gas mining related jobs are highly specialised and people who occupy these positions are usually not from SA.

Around 98% of SA’s exclusive economic zone (a zone in the ocean in which the country adjacent to it has ownership/rights over) is subject to a right or lease for offshore exploration activities. Yes, 98%. Only 5% of the oceans around SA are protected.

Two weeks ago we received news that the world’s largest listed oil & gas company @exxonmobil has given up its rights to continue exploring oil and gas off South Africa.

Let’s take a step back and see why this is GOOD NEWS.

My beautiful friend’s film premieres on the 21st of September. See all the details below. @tembisa_J is a powerful communicator, and this time, we hear a story directed and produced by her🎞 https://t.co/dXh5DFt7G1

New week. New challenges. Same God 🙏🏾

If we replaced cancel culture with critical thinking, we'd have empathetic conversations instead of emotional reactions. And, by talking, we learn to separate honest mistakes from actual hate.

Exxon ditches its South African exploration projects. Finally. https://t.co/KzopMCT0Kz

This is good news for #SouthAfrica’s marine ecosystems and #fishing communities especially in light of the #MauritiusOilSpill https://t.co/r8YpM2S7Xa @WILDOCEANSSA
