An unapologetic Black historian, who’s getting my Ph.D at UMD, and studying the ways slavery dictated how citizenship operated in the early U.S. Views are mine.

Well, the cat’s out of the bag - & apparently on the front page of the @washingtonpost!!! Thank you, @gbrockell, both for the interview & for an amazing article. #history #justice #CivilWar #slavery #documentary #twitterstorians https://t.co/TyheWmpcys

Astonishingly dumb idea. One of the biggest reason we will confirm the nominee BEFORE Election Day is to ensure a full 9-Justice majority to resolve any (inevitable) election disputes. Dems desperately, desperately don’t want that. https://t.co/2QcudzvwO8

Bush v. Gore really fucked this country up. https://t.co/hn15bsQfEs

#Rutgers just fired ALL #adjuncts in the giant Writing Program for the Spring! After putting tremendous effort into converting courses with no additional compensation for a job with low pay/no benefits, this is how our corporate university rewards us. We will be fighting back!

Long story short, this situation was about her observing racist microaggressions, demanding to know why the convo wasn’t centering on antisemitism instead, & then throwing her tenure in an adjunct’s face before lying about her institution firing thousands of adjuncts mid-pandemic https://t.co/16eGxh6VCc

Virginia officials are trying to block Trump's rally tonight, calling it a "severe public health threat." 4,000 supporters are expected. The governor's current COVID order limits crowds to no more than 250 people. https://t.co/tFQcyrobl7

What the fuck is this “trying” bullshit? If governors actually wanted to stop a Trump rally they could. I fail to see how this is so damn difficult for y’all. https://t.co/IDWK8LjQ4z

fun fact: if you were to design a system effective at resisting changes pursued by 61% of the population, it would look like the electoral college https://t.co/SMEKsXvL7x

"We call them the 'Latinos for Trump,' where we are polling at numbers that I guess no Republican has ever polled at before, perhaps, Abraham Lincoln. But in those days, he wasn't big into the Hispanic movement, I think. He had other things to think about." -- Trump https://t.co/YPcgSxzcgb

Starting at age 9, Black boys start to experience discriminatory discipline. It happens so often, Black parents have given it a name: “4th grade syndrome.” This is what it looks like in the time of Covid.A disciplinary record will haunt him. This must stop https://t.co/BCxjuklWKA

When the cops killed 7 y/o Aiyana Jones in Detroit during a no knock raid, they arrested her aunt saying she grabbed their gun. The aunt said she was grabbing Aiyana because a flash bang had set the baby on fire. During the trial, the judge threatened the aunt for her outbursts.

I could honestly go on and on, but I’ll end on this. Wilentz doesn’t see it, but he’s just like Trump. Wilentz is putting white supremacy and the 1619 Project on the same moral plain, in the same way Trump did with Nazis and protesters immediately following Charlottesville.

There are so many good historian out there. So many new historians. And Wilentz keeps getting national press room to spew his BS and defend himself under the guise of criticizing historians. Wilentz doesn’t give two shits about conservatives. He only cares about himself. https://t.co/REs8PHjoi8

In his WaPo piece, Wilentz correctly points out that Trump’s comments on history aren’t about history, but himself. I would add this piece, (along with so many of his other pieces on the 1619 Project), aren’t about history, but Wilentz. And I’m sick and tired of it. https://t.co/MElaORyrx5

Wilentz has to make outlandish claims like this so that he can keep hating the 1619 Project and using the same talking points as conservatives. This is, and I’m not exaggerating, the scholarly equivalent of saying “I’m not racist, but...” https://t.co/08L33sW69I

Now, Wilentz (with the platform of the WaPo) is saying there has been far more outcry against the 1619 Project from the left, which he presumably belongs to, than the right. This makes literally no sense. It’s not even close to reality.

See, Wilentz hates the 1619 Project. And so he can’t actually fully backpedal and distance himself from conservatives. He tries but fails. With Cotton, Wilentz tired to present himself as being completely opposed to his (il)logic while still holding onto the beliefs Cotton cites.

Wilentz is trying to sure up his own legacy. For almost a year he said absolutely nothing when conservatives parroted his points and cited him. He kept adding fuel to the fire. But as soon as conservatives went full blown fascist, Wilentz suddenly saw the light (not).

TLDR: Wilentz is now trying to cast himself as not being aligned with conservatives who have, quite literally, been using the exact same arguments he has this whole time. His timing, and focus on Sen. Cotton is a dead giveaway of why he is now attempting to rewrite history.

Last month, Wilentz wrote a piece for @nybooks about Tom Cotton citing him in his own attacks on the 1619 Project. I wrote a response piece, but I guess the NYRB wasn’t interested. I’ve posted that short piece here, b/c it goes into Wilentz’s illogic. https://t.co/B2fJwhsV1M
