Satellites, astrodynamics, spacecraft navigation, and mountaineering. Probably in New Mexico and probably hunting your satellite. Opinions/analyses are my own.

Are you ready for #FatBearWeek? Next week, @KatmaiNPS holds its annual competition so you can judge which chubby cubby takes this year's title. Pic of last year's winner: 435 Holly #Alaska https://t.co/eKjNAYYAJx

No comment, just a query: is there a philatelist in the house? https://t.co/Pas4DD9EAK

Somewhat seriously looking for somewhere I can get these. The main Indian post site sells them, but doesn't seem to take international payment methods. https://t.co/BW8fJQsjWt

Things I love: The online conference platform changing my name to "Undefined Undefined".

That's all. Bye.

Reminder since Venus is in the news today: You don't hear much about it in US schools because "Communism!!!!!", but the Soviet Union actually landed probes on Venus and have transmitted pictures back. https://t.co/d0BOYAW9co

I've been amused by a lot of the reactions saying that it made a lot of press when it happened in the 80s. That's fair I guess. My point here was that the extent that of most "teaching" on the Soviet program TODAY is basically: Sputnik Yuri Dogs Fake space shuttle Crashes https://t.co/wuSkKVRe0Q

We don't currently know of a way to plausibly make this phosphine abiotically. But nature is often cleverer than us. So the odds are we're going to learn something about exotic chemistry, not exobiology. (but, but.... I'll keep an open mind. It's not *impossible*...)

FYI, this is not a "Soviet Union was actually good" post, this is a "Soviet space history is woefully neglected pretty much anywhere" post.

The unforeseen consequences of COVID: All of the NYC/DC reporters who used to put money into the pockets of the exact same Ohio and Pennsylvania diners now have to randomly walk up to people at construction sites. https://t.co/8CAk3YUTY2

In case anyone was wondering, I hate DC.

30 people liked this, and less than half realize what it's actually about. https://t.co/7Pd0UK4pzj

If you run a conference that usually charges $1k+ for registration, and this year you decide you can put it on with the same amount of online content for free... you probably shouldn't have been charging thousands of dollars in the first place.

Who on earth decided it was a good idea to randomly warp every state/providence in this map?

MLS does some really, really dumb stuff and somehow this is maybe what annoys me the most. https://t.co/eW4kRUV04m
