This study from @oiioxford comes at a critical time. For the sake of public health, social media platforms must put sufficient fact checks in place to moderate their content and halt the spread of COVID-related misinformation. https://t.co/hOYqb2zaOj
Big new UK Data Strategy, overshadowed by IMBill fuss, but well worth a read. V ambitious. Strikingly different approach to that of EU: less precautionary on innovation; more utilitarian approach to data protection. Interesting to see how Brussels reacts. https://t.co/Eso28xwdBJ
Lots of commentary on Brexit implications of various HMG announcements today. But worth a look at this National Data Strategy - https://t.co/9XNXEnxj6f too. For some, this is what Brexit’s about. Avoiding wrong kind of regulation/supporting innovation. https://t.co/bzBlhANxDZ
But how do you square wider economic benefits with individual rights? What are the implications for EU data adequacy? And w/o free flowing data from some of our biggest data/services markets, how easy will it be to build UK champions? Lots going on here... https://t.co/fySLdrG2GV
PS: Fun fact: after all legal wrangling, it turns out there has been only ONE case (involving Croatian citizen) over lifetime of Privacy Shield sent to US for legal redress b/c of alleged govt data misuse That case was dismissed b/c alleged abuse happened before PrivacyShield 🤷♂️
Differences over data/privacy risk undermining EU/US cooperation on range of key policies (as well as huge amount of bilateral business). There are some issues, but discussions on how to resolve them need to be rooted in reality... https://t.co/T7GAcU5NyZ
EU risks being dethroned as world’s lead digital regulator > New in @FT If the EU wants to continue to use its economic and political weight to set higher standards, it cannot stand by while others invoke security threats ↘️ https://t.co/PbTipVBgh1
Agree with this. But democracies working together v authoritarian vision of tech, also means EU & US (&UK) finding (new) ways to cooperate on data. The risk is differences over data/privacy continue to divide us https://t.co/KpDu4pGlnD

Cheers! Never got my Gaelic to that level: sure you will https://t.co/BB12fUbA7d
Well worth a read. As authors argue: this is a ‘deeply political’ issue https://t.co/hOm0QWfPy8
Trouble with #COVID19 tracing apps: take up in France stuck at 3.5%; Dutch raise concerns about Google/Apple access to personal data. And UK still testing (2nd go) app...We all need to learn some important lessons, if we’re going to get best out of innovative tech.
UK and EU should strike an agreement to cooperate on security and law enforcement, even if it’s a thin one. If not, only the criminals, terrorists, and hackers stand to gain. This is how... https://t.co/L0DWF8M5XN
Frederick Engels on the Reign of Terror: "We think of this as the reign of people who inspire terror; on contrary, it is reign of people who are themselves terrified ... cruelties perpetrated by frightened people in order to reassure themselves".
