It’s refreshing to once again watch a leader use his platform to constructively focus the country’s attention on a problem and proposed solution, even in the midst of such chaos. You can disagree with Biden, but you have to appreciate the return to sober focus.

Yes, the “program” in Biden’s speech will cost a lot of money & many of those “investments” probably won’t pan out, but don’t for a second try to argue that any of it is worse or less fixable than a president who sits idly by while our democracy is attacked by terrorists.

At bottom, the rationale here is that if society thinks people aren’t being paid enough, society should pay the gap rather than impose what is effectively a one-size-fits-all “employment tax” on every business in the country.

Last point: not all labor markets are national in scope—in fact very few are. A federal rule makes little sense when the markets to which it applies are regional.
