Ground breaking #UofG study proves a more humane way to raise meat chickens. Prof. Tina Widowski, Dr. Stephanie Torrey & team found raising slower-growing chickens improves welfare. Approach could be costly, but benefits animal & can improve meat quality https://t.co/3CsHDZ6LL2 https://t.co/YD8VwqCuSi

Drs. Widowski and Torrey just completed the largest and most comprehensive study of broiler chicken welfare worldwide - they studied > 7,500 birds from 16 strains!! ๐Ÿ” Stay tuned for the peer-reviewed papers ๐Ÿง Funding was provided by @CertifiedGAP, @UofG_FfT, and @OMAFRA https://t.co/bc15ytQR8o

Ahh! To "stimulate" play behaviour!! Oops ๐Ÿ˜Š

Also, these results support the complex relationship play has with welfare - our Director Dr. Mason has actually written about this with CCSAW Alumnus and @universitelaval Assistant professor Jaime Ahloy-Dallaire https://t.co/s2nVhnJvRc

Interestingly, they found that chicks from non-enriched pens "played" more, when all measures of play were analyzed. This might be because the chicks in empty, non-enriched pens were under-stimulated by their environment (they were maybe bored!). https://t.co/s16KehyH3r

They ran three worm running tests (where researchers make "worms" out of paper that chicks can "attack") and three free-space tests (where chicks get access to a new area to explore) both spaced out through the chicks' development, to simulate play behaviour.

The authors set out to evaluate effects of environmental enrichment on play behaviour in fast-growing broiler chickens. They raised chicks in 6 non-enriched and 6 enriched pens (pictured) ๐Ÿ‘‡ https://t.co/nrg7B5c6aO

Third, that female lemur weight gain varies seasonally due to natural breeding cycles (but lemur breeding is carefully managed in captivity, so breeding and weight gain may not match up) Fourth, that older lemurs were larger, but possibly not quite obese!
